ITMM in IYoM 2023: Integrated Termite Management in MilletsDoubling Farmer Income: Imperatives of Plant Health Informatics Network

Cicer arietinum secures position of third most important pulse crop in the world after dry bean and peas. About 90% of world’s chickpea production takes place in six countries, namely, Australia, India, Turkey, Myanmar, Ethiopia and Pakistan. Chickpea is a drought tolerant crop and is grown in rain fed areas which survive the progressive drought since sowing up to harvest. In India, this crop is attacked by termites and more infestation has been recorded from Rajasthan and Haryana. In Indian scenario, mainly higher termites belonging to Termitidae: Isoptera attack chickpea. Under the ambit of National Fellow Project, chickpea was selected as one of the important crops to study climate smart termination of termites in rabi season. In the rain fed agriculture, the termite management module could successfully keep them away. Our results of pesticide risk analysis advocated termite management module followed is full proof and safe. Thus it can be advised for the farmers in rain fed agriculture.

Termite damaged chickpea plants

Management: Recommendations of seed treatment for various crops are offered by Government of India under its most ambitious programme Total Seed Treatment Campaign 2007.

Following seed-treatment-recommendation is safe as no deleterious effects to seedlings are observed. This is offered by us in NF Project for chickpea seed treatment:

Imidacloprid@ 5-10; fipronil @ 5-7 and chlorpyriphos @7 ml/kg seeds.

Field application: Please see relevant section (Termiticides) for termiticides and their doses.
